Two whole years of Gears 4. Can you believe that? It feels like only yesterday that we watched our first Coalition-built entry into the Gears saga land in your hands. It was scary and exciting but above anything it was the start of our journey together.

The Gears community is absolute fire and passion every single day and we couldn’t be prouder to have the fans that we do. Whether it’s our Live Team continuing to support Gears 4 or the development team working on Gears 5, we’re all fueled by your fandom.

Speaking of fandom, your feedback continues to be an important voice throughout both teams at The Coalition. Some community feedback will see direct results and improvements for Gears 4 – and much of it will influence what you experience when you play Gears 5 next year. As we move ever closer to Gears 5, you’ll find less of the former and more of the latter becomes the new reality.

But that doesn’t mean we’re done with Gears 4 by any means. We have plenty more to come and we have a second anniversary to celebrate! So let’s get to What’s Up this week in Gears:

  • Stay Frosty makes its Gears 4 debut on Friday, October 12th
  • Get 4XP all weekend to celebrate Gears 4’s Second Anniversary
  • The commemorative Golden Gear Pack is back for this weekend only
  • New Gears of War Avatar Items are out now!

Gears 4 2nd Anniversary Event

4XP Weekend

Stay Frosty

Stay Frosty is back! Last seen in Gears of War 3, Stay Frosty is the TDM ‘SWAT’ variant of the Gearsiverse that’s now making its debut in Gears 4.

For those of you who don’t know, Stay Frosty in Gears 3 armed you with a higher-damage Hammerburst, pocket-sniper worthy Snub pistol and a grenade. With no DBNOs, the game mode was all about ranged combat, effective use of cover and smart movement.

So what does the Gears 4 version look like? Well, that’s actually going to be up to you.

We want to build Stay Frosty alongside the community, gathering your feedback on specific aspects of the mode to help make it the best it can be. We’ll try some ideas. They might work. They might not. But together, we want to make the best Stay Frosty (even if that ends up being the original!).

Here’s what we’re planning for version one:

Stay Frosty V1

Mode: Team Deathmatch
Rounds: 1
Respawns: 35

Loadout: Hammerburst, Golden Gun, 1 Grenade

Hammerburst Tuning

  • 1.5 bursts to the head will down
  • 3 bursts to the body will down
  • Active Reload: Rate of fire increase, no damage buff, increased cooldown time

Golden Gun Tuning

  • No aiming (hipfire only)
  • Starting ammo: 4

Grenade Tuning

  • Reduced damage radius

Weapon Spawns: Hammerbursts only

DBNO: On

The biggest change here is obviously the substitution of the pocket-sniper Snub pistol for Golden Gun, our instant-kill hip fire only pistol. Hammerbursts will still be the name of the game, but the Golden Gun provides the opportunity for high risk high reward kills that helps break some of the deadlock that could sometimes occur in Stay Frosty in a different manner.

Due to an unforeseen bug, we unfortunately have had to keep DBNOs enabled for current iterations of Stay Frosty. We’re looking at rectifying this in a future update in order to bring back the classic instant-kill experience for the Hammerburst.

Does it work? You’ll be the judge. You can tweet us your feedback on the Golden Gun weapon substitution beginning tomorrow by tweeting @CoalitionGears or posting in the Stay Frosty thread under the Gears 4 category in the forums. Iterations may be as quick as within this first event, or in future appearances of Stay Frosty.

Museum of Community Glory

Greetings Gears, Vectes here, back with another edition of our Gears Creator Spotlight.

This week, we thought we would do things a bit differently and highlight another form of content creation with graphic design.

Introducing Jeter! Ashley aka Jeter is a Gears competitive player and a prominent figure in the Gears Esports scene. She will be competing with some of her old Fire N Ice teammates in the upcoming Toronto Regional event taking place on November 10 & 11.

You might not know it, but Jeter has had the chance to create weapon skins for multiple esports organizations: Team Elevate and Fire N Ice. She has also created Twitch overlays as well as YouTube and Twitter headers for Gears Esports players, teams, commentators, etc.

Without further ado, here is the art we wanted to showcase:

You will find some other great art on her Portfolio. You can also keep in touch with her on Twitter.

Are you a Gears Video Creator in the community? Tweet a link to your channel to @CoalitionGears with #WhatsUpGears for a chance to be featured in What’s Up next week! Everyone featured will receive the TCA Commendation Lancer.
