Happy anniversary Gears fans! Today marks the ninth year since Gears of War’s original release date of November 6th 2006, and we couldn’t be more excited to mark yet another year in the life of the series. We wanted to take the opportunity today to celebrate the past, present and future of Gears of War with a number of announcements and new details.

To kick things off, we want to say a massive thank you to all the Ultimate Edition players out there who have played a whopping 10 million multiplayer matches online already! This adds to the tens of millions more across the franchise’s history, and we can’t wait to share many more matches to come with our fans.

Ultimate Edition Updates

To celebrate the ninth anniversary of the original Gears of War, we’ll be launching Ultimate Edition Double XP in all playlists from November 6th at 12pm PDT until Tuesday 11th November at 12pm PDT.

We know many of our fans loved to play high rounds to win Execution matches with fast self-revives on the original Gears of War. This weekend only, Warzone will be replaced with the Classic: Execution special event playlist, bringing with it with 5 second self-revives, and a first to 10 rounds win requirement.

We are also excited to share that we're working on updating our Playlist Map Rotations in the future, which we know has been a hotly requested feature in the community. We’ll now be tailoring the map rotation to offer fan favorite maps more often, and change the general overall order to keep things varied.

Finally, our bi-weekly release of Special Events continues on November 20th 2015 when Brothers to the End makes its debut on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

Beginning on November 13th, we’ll be asking you to share your favorite franchise moments, creations, screenshots and videos in our #9YearsofGears competition! Over the coming weeks, we’ll showcase entries highlighting what you love about Gears of War across our social media channels, and be handing out a ton of community prizes in the process.

Competition Details
Between November 13th to December 18th 2015, share your favorite Gears of War moments, personal creations, videos, screenshots and more to one of two locations:

  • On Twitter, using hashtag #9YearsofGears
  • In our official forums competition thread, found HERE.

Sharing any content related to Gears of War in either of those two locations provides the opportunity to be “spot prized” by The Coalition for your efforts! Prizes will range from our community weapon skins to physical swag – it’s all a surprise as to what you might get awarded. You can also enter as many times as you’d like!

Don’t forget, the release of Backwards Compatibility means you’ll be able to enter our competition by screenshotting and capturing direct from your Xbox One console as well as any other method you may choose from across the franchise.

We can’t wait to see what you put together. Stay tuned to our Gears of War forums, Facebook and Twitter for more information next week.

Backwards Compatibility News

For Gears of War: Ultimate Edition owners who have played online since August 25 2015, we have an update on when and how you’ll be receiving your tokens for the complete collection of Gears of War titles on Xbox 360.

We will begin fulfilling these tokens starting December 1 through Xbox Live’s message system, so keep your eyes peeled to your Xbox inbox. Tokens will be sent out in waves and we will not get everyone in the first wave – we appreciate your patience as we roll this program out!

For those of you who still own your Gears of War titles on disc or purchased them digitally on Xbox 360, you’ll be able to access those titles when Backwards Compatibility launches November 12th with the New Xbox One Experience.

Don't forget to upload your saves to the cloud via your Xbox 360 to retain your campaign progress! You can find more information on our official Backwards Compatibility page.  More information about the Backward Compatibility program can be found at www.xbox.com/backcompat.
