Gears of War 4 - February Quit Update
We know quitters can be a problem. In Ranked Play, losing a member who rage quits or simply decides to stop playing can make all the difference in the outcome of a match. Today, we are taking our first steps to combat quitters with more significant action.
TOday's Quit penalty update
As of right now, the starting quit penalty is set to 30 minutes – up from the previous 15 minutes. We are also exploring the potential of turning on Credit based penalties for repeat offenders in a future server-side update pending the results of this change.
For those of you who don’t know, we also keep track of your match completion rating over time with a behind the scenes number. Every failure to finish a match impacts this score, resulting in harsher and harsher time penalties for players with a pattern of quitting behavior. Consistently finishing matches is the only way to recover from any quit impacts to your match completion rating.
If you drop from the match for any reason, you can get back in the fight within 5 minutes of leaving (providing the match is still ongoing) via the Rejoin option in the Versus menu.
Previously, you would receive a reduced but still notable hit to your ‘match completion’ rating when rejoining. As of today, this has been reduced to the value of completing one full match. If you rejoin a match, complete it and then complete another match (without rejoining) in full, the deficit from your rejoined match will have been recovered.
COMING SOON: AFK TIMEOUTS
The next target in our sights will be AFK players. In the near future, we'll be releasing a server-side update that allows players significantly less time to be AFK before being kicked from Social and Ranked (the latter of which will incur a penalty). We will monitor the results of these changes and listen to your feedback to determine any next steps.
Our philosophy on Ranked Play is simple – as soon as you begin matchmaking into Ranked Play, you are committing to playing and finishing a match of that game mode. If you cannot commit to that, Social is where you need to go.
If you do unfortunately still have a quitter on your team, there’s a couple of things you should know:
- Performing well whilst down a player (or more) against another team can have a beneficial impact on your Skill Rating – especially if you win any rounds while down on players
- After a player’s rejoin window has ‘closed’ and at least one round has passed, a Quit To Main Menu option will appear in the pause menu. If you see this, you can quit your Ranked Match without penalty. Think of it as a way to forfeit a match if you feel it’s unwinnable.
We’re putting a flag in the ground to combat cheaters with these changes, and we’ll continue to listen to your feedback and monitor the results. Quitters, be warned.
